News: Review of 2007“The individuals running for the top office in the land were extremely careful not to make a mistake, that is, to say anything that could be used against them. The result was that, to this writer at least, they all sounded the same...” I would like to consider the news of 2007 from the political, economic and spiritual segments. In the political area the principal news centered around the efforts of different individuals to secure the presidential nomination. While news commentators tried to make the contest sound interesting, it is not. The individuals running for the top office in the land were extremely careful not to make a mistake, that is, to say anything that could be used against them. The result was that, to this writer at least, they all sounded the same, and I have no idea how they would behave in a given situation. As is the case with the great majority of American voters I have no clue as to whom I shall endorse with my vote, as significant as I believe that to be. In the economic area there appears to be real differences among the candidates. The effects of globalization are unsure at this time, but they are truly significant. Whether or not, the American middle class is disappearing is an event of great importance. It seems to me to be the overriding issue. I, for one, do not agree with the Clinton response to American views of the American economy, that is, a denial of previous Democratic party views in favor of building a solid majority of votes for an economic outlook that is basically considered by many to be that of the Republican party, one that favors economic over social gains. Whatever!!! Again, I have no idea at this time for whom I shall cast my vote. In the spiritual realm there appears to be the greatest differences. Fundamentalism is on the rise. Fundamentalism, to me, is the substitution of simplistic answers to difficult questions. In the spiritual realm that is seen as the popularity of candidates like the former governor of Arkansas. The popularity of things like creative design to genuine science is but one example. If the majority of American voters buy into this nonsense we are in a much poorer state than I had thought. Surely, this raises serious question about our educational institutions, let alone our spiritual maturity. The candidates avoid facing these issues, as well they might. Sectarian religion is playing a major role in this contest. It may come to rue that fact. |
