Forum: The Current Immigration ProblemWe welcome your view on the current issue. A thorough exposition of the issue through discussion will be helpful. We ask only that you address the issue stated and do so as briefly as possible. Therefore, every comment submitted will be examined accordingly. The Current Immigration Problem In a modern, technological nation human problems that are combined with economic and political problems can challenge the most generous thinking of even the most fair-minded citizens. We believe that is the case in the current immigration problem facing large parts of the United States. On the one side, we have immigrants, principally from Mexico, who are desperate to escape the poverty in which they and their families are locked. They are willing and able to work hard and ask only for the opportunity to do so. But, to do so most of them feel they must enter the United States illegally. Other human players in the drama may not be so well-motivated. On the other side, you have the United States, a prosperous but somewhat limited society, that wants to be open to immigrants, but believes it must set sensible limits to that openness, or face economic and political suicide. It now faces the problem of porous borders and the presence within those borders of some eleven million illegal immigrants. Granted that there are many other factors involved, but this, in its simplest exposition, constitutes the parameters of the issue. The president and ruling political party of the United States propose a program that would allow illegal immigrants the privilege of remaining in the United States as workers for a limited period of time, that might be extended into a more permanent time. Critics claim the administration’s program does not adequately deal with the problem as it does not sufficiently close the borders or take into realistic consideration the problems posed by the large number of children of these immigrants who, if born in the United States, automatically become citizens of this country with the ability later to acquire citizenship for their parents.
